Somehow.... Just somehow they pulled it off!

Reigate slays St George!

Reigate Priory L2 2- 1 Old Georgians

A match of epic proportions took place on Saturday.  The Ladies 2s were coming into it after a stagnant and lackluster first performance back after Christmas.  The oppo was Old Georgians who are top of the league, have not dropped a point all season and beat us 6-0 back in October (as well as injuring four of our players!).

So, we dragged ourselves over to the opulent surroundings of St George’s in Weybridge expecting the worst.  There were murmourings of  ‘Giant Killing’ and ‘Nothing to Lose’ but I don’t think anyone thought we’d come out on top.  But Come out on top we jolly well did!!

We started with the sun in our eyes and they came at us wanting blood.  We defended and worked hard but after about 10 minutes they scored a cracking goal, which sailed right into the top corner.  Some have admitted to thinking quietly…’Oh no. Here we go.’

However, we settled down a bit and started to play some nice hockey.  The usual back row with a lot of ‘experience’, Camilla in goal, Kaz, Sian and Jess, stood firm.  Our halves of Emma, Lilly, Ang, Holly and Harriet ran their socks off.  Upfront talent in the form of Lucy, Katie, Jenny and Kate got in the defence’s faces and caused them problems.  The younger members ran around lots and the older members provided support and encouragement.  We had a good couple of runs up the pitch, one of which was converted by Kate with a lovely goal and another by Emma, which she volleyed in.

Suddenly OGs realised they were 2-1 down.  Not something they’ve had to deal with much this season.  Half time came and Reigate was on a high.  We resolved to dig in and win this bad-boy!

After half time they threw everything they had at us.  They have very good and skillful players and were constantly pressing our D.  They had a number of shorts but couldn’t convert.  In the last two minutes, Lucy stopped one on the line with her leg and a flick was duly given.  We all feared the worst.  Camilla, however, had it all under control and batted the ball away calmly to shrieks of delight from the team.

When the whistle finally went, we couldn’t believe it!  Lots of high fiving, back slapping and cheering.  OGs looked like they’d been robbed.  Camilla was man of the match for her amazing keeping on the day and a special mention goes to the legs of the younger players!

Well done all – see, we can play well when we want to!
