Back in the game ......

Three for the price of one!

Welcome to a bumper edition of wins from the Ladies 2s.

Over the past three weeks, we have returned to the winning ways we saw last year with victories over Kenley (3-2), Woking (3-2) and Wimbledon (3-1)!

The start to the season has been a bit slow and until the Kenley match the 2s had only secured one point from a draw with Wanderers in the second game of the league.  We were promoted last year to Div 3 with only one loss over the season so it was bound to be a readjustment but we were all getting a little worried that we had lost our va va voom!

The Kenley game was exciting with a green (Reigate) and a yellow card (Kenley) and a sending off for Kenley’s centre forward who was getting frustrated by Reigate’s defence.  It was a real battle that went right down to the wire with a short against Reigate in the last few minutes. The team was made up of the old guard and a number of colts that hadn’t played for the 2s before but they were all fantastic and made a real difference by taking the ball forward confidently.

Man of the match was Chappers who kept strong in the centre and marshalled her troops.

Woking was an early start and again the team was a good mix of raw young talent and mature experience.  The teams were evenly matched for the most part but as we all tired there were a number of stand out players on both teams that directed play.  Woking pushed right until the last whistle but Reigate battled hard for the win, which was well deserved.  Some of the Ladies 1s who had played on the neighbouring pitch ahead of our game stayed to cheer us on and Sally gave us some sound advice at half time.  Much appreciated ladies.

Man of the match was Harriet who ran everything down and caused their defence lots of problems!

Wimbledon Development tend to have late fixtures as they play school games in the morning.  Well, we arrived as the sun was setting and the evening mist was rolling in over the pitch.  A very late push back caused concern for those who planned to attend the wine tasting later that evening but we managed to put that out of our mind for 70 minutes of the best hockey we have played since last season.  We look like a winning team again.

This was all despite a number of last minute injuries for Lucy and Woolfy. We had a completely different right wing, with Trudi and Annie who had come to play for us from the 3s, and Izzy who is going from strength to strength.  The centre was dominated by Siobhan, Clare and an imperious Chappers.  The left was the tried and tested formula of Emma and Harriet, and then Kaz, Camilla and Jess stood around at the back.

From the off, Reigate played positive hockey and moved the ball around really well.  There were times when Wimbledon looked strong but Reigate managed to keep them at bay.  There were quite a lot of short corners awarded against us and this was the only time that the oppo really threatened.  A short was given at the death and Camilla reminded us that it would be nice to win 3-1 not 3-2 again.  So we kept it out!

Man of the match was Chappers who was everywhere and scored 2 goals!
