Reigate Polecats kicked off their season with an opening game against Sevenoaks on a wet and blustery Sunday morning. Baptisms generally involve water and this first game was no exception as torrential rain on an already soaked Hartswood pitch made this a

The initial pressure came from Sevenoaks but the Reigate defence held firm. Slowly and steadily the Polecats began to assert their superiority with sustained pressure down the left-hand side where Hannah Taylor and Eva McLeod combined well and looked the most likely to score.

Two short corners for Reigate just before half time promised much, but the team could not capitalise on their pressure and the half ended goalless.

First clear cut chance of the second half fell to Reigate with a swift break down the right wing leading to a shot from Loulou Zander whistling passed the right post, with the Sevenoaks keeper stranded.

Midway through the second half luck turned against Reigate as Sevenoaks built some pressure with two successive short corners. The first was kicked clear by goalie Ellie Burge, but the second fell to the Sevenoaks centre forward who slammed the ball powerfully into the bottom corner.

This setback brought out the best in Reigate as they displayed deep resilience to fight back strongly. A tide of Reigate pressure brought two more short corners which led to a series of shots peppering the Sevenoaks goalie. She saved the first two but could not stop her own defender knocking the ball in for the Reigate equaliser.

Once equal, confidence flowed through the hosts and a slick passing move down the right-hand side led to Lauren Hall clinically flicking the ball into the net for Reigate’s second goal. It was no more than their pressure warranted.

As the game headed for full time, a late attack by Sevenoaks resulted in a short corner and from it a deflected looped shot into the Reigate net, meaning the game finished in a 2-2 draw.

After the game coach Marc Zander enthused about the performance saying he was super impressed with the commitment of the girls, especially in the wet conditions. He added that the team had played very well for the first game of the season and that they were unlucky not to win the game.
