This week RPHC Ladies 1XI hosted league leaders London Wayfarers 2XI in what was geared up to be the battle of giants.

After a strong team talk and the promise of Mary Berry cup cakes if we won, the ladies were pumped and ready for action. Priory flew into action from the first whistle, an unusual concept for them, as usually join in around 10 minutes into the game... Finally they got the start they'd been looking for and put Wayfarers on the back foot to the point they couldn't actually get the ball out of their half (and it was their push back)! Priory continued to dominate for the first 20 minutes and were unlucky not to break the deadlock earlier in the game The break finally came when Georgie Wood moved up the right wing, with her pace and determination drew the defenders and keeper toward her, slotted the ball across the face of goal for Laura Zander to finish a simple but deadly move. Slightly dazed and confused of taking the lead on the game Wayfarers took advantage and equalised within a few minutes of the restart, half time score 1-1.
Following the halftime talk and reminder of cup cakes, Priory gained momentum by reverting back to short passing and starving Wayfarers of the ball, Jane Williams dominated the centre of park and soon Wayfarers were asking questions of themselves. Another strong run from Georgie Wood down the right taking on 4 defenders, saw her finish the move by taking the ball into the D, shooting and scoring, Priory leading again. A carbon copy of the first half, another slight lapse in concentration, which resulted on Wayfarers equalising again. 2-2, with 10 to go... Priory picked themselves up and started to dominate again, Georgie Wood continued to destroy the defence on the right, which ultimately won her the player of the match award, again another run into the D, resulting in a short corner being awarded to Priory. Jane Williams, who in the first half had a goal disallowed as was struck from a nats hair (ok, maybe a bit more than that) outside the D, stepped up for the first strike. Injected by Tiger Garfield with pinpoint accuracy, to Lucy Donovan who stopped the ball in the exact spot required, Jane Williams pulled the trigged, the thunderous sound of the ball on the backboard was swallowed up by the cheer from the supporters on the sideline. 3-2 to Priory with 5 to go... Knowing they were minutes from claiming all 3 points, Priory stepped it up and held onto the ball, there was a couple of scary moments, but the defensive trio of Izzy Higgs, Stacy Dutton and Keeper Cat Lynn stood fast, battened down the hatches, shut up shop and hung the sign 'back in 5'. Priory had the opportunity to kill off the game following another crazy run from Georgie Wood on the right, should have been the simplest of finishes for Tiger Garfield, but a surge if adrenaline saw her sweep the ball past the open goal and onto the post, how she missed that, one will never understand! Thankfully, following that howler Priory held on to the end. This was probably the best performance of the season and could not of asked anymore from any player... Well done girls, fantastic result! The only question is now... Does Jackie have to bake cup cakes every week? We think so!!
