Everyone was excited to see each other after the break and catch up, though we were all feeling the excesses of Christmas and were keen to blow away the cobwebs.

We had an early push-back away to Mitcham for a friendly ahead of the league re-starting next week. They are in the league above and so we knew it would be a good test. We had a large squad but there were injuries niggling a number of players so wanted to use the game to test our fitness as well as getting back into the swing of it. Sadly we were missing Woolfy who has badly injured her knee, get well soon.
We won the toss and took the end looking away from the bright sun low in the sky. Word of the day was, of course, SUNSHINE! However, we were all still asleep for the first five minutes and let them get a goal in open play. After that we sorted ourselves out and seemed to have the majority of possession. We looked good going forwards and penetrated their D time and again but couldn’t find the backboard. We had lots of shorts but we squandered each opportunity due to being a little rusty and slightly off target. There was some excitement when Rose got clobbered by the goalie’s stick, which hit her hands. Quite worrying for a pianist and so she is going to buy some gloves this week! Towards the end of the first half they converted a short corner with their sweeper coming up to smash it into the bottom right hand corner. We were going into half time 2-nil down.
Kaz got us going at half time – true to form, we were making heavy weather of the simple stuff and over complicating this hockey thing. Less hitting and hoping, we couldn’t go through them, we needed to use the wings and to stack the D not all run in and hope for the best. Word of the second half was FIGHT!
The second half was better than the first as people’s hockey brains and decision-making speed came back to them. But it was more of the same; lots of possession, lots of strikes, lots of shorts and no goals! Ang in centre mid, Stacey at right half, Alex at left half were all doing well at working the ball forward from the stoic defence, Kaz and Jess at the back and Camilla in goal (amazing save in the second half, pushing the ball just over the crossbar). The front line of Ali K (foot healed), Lucy, Rose, Harriet, Karen (dodgy knee) and Freyja were excellent at working it in but couldn’t find the goal. They kept the pressure on and ten minutes from time Ali K finally slotted it away to bring us to 2-1. Three minutes from time she almost repeated it but it went just wide. Then suddenly Mitcham gained possession and ran it right up the middle of the pitch to score in the final couple of minutes. 3-1.
We had many more chances on goal but ultimately lost because we didn’t score more goals than them. However, it was a great way to get ourselves going ahead of what will be a tough second half of the season.
And many thanks to both our umpires, Tamsin and Emma. Good job ladies.
