Reigate Priory Ladies 2s vs Wayfarers Its goodbye from me and its goodbye from them!

Surrey Ladies Hockey Division 4 Champions, Reigate Priory 2nd XI, turned out for the last time on Saturday already assured of their promotion to Division 3.  We were playing the team that had been chasing us all season, Wayfarers, who we expected to give us a very hard game.  They did.  They got there about two hours early to psych and warm themselves up.  Reigate got there early too to support the Ladies 3s who were battling for second place in their league, sadly that wasn’t to be as they ended on a draw.  A great season nonetheless for the 3s who were promoted to that league only last year and came third overall. Congratulations!
Unfortunately, there were a couple of hangovers and a sick-note within the 13 that turned up.  Kaz was not happy about the hangovers and mentioned this frequently before, during and after the game.  Sorry Kaz!
The first half started well for Reigate who had all the possession for the first ten minutes and slotted away a goal, or so they thought. It was disallowed. Nevermind, once more unto the breach dear friends.  Wayfarers woke up and started to play some good hockey.  They converted this into two goals in the first half.  We went in to half time down but not out. Will we ever learn to do the easy stuff??
The second half saw Reigate taking more control of the game.  Despite having many more shots on goal than the oppo, the presence that we’d had in front of goal all season deserted us.  They put one more past our defence and suddenly we were staring down the barrel of a 3-0 defeat.  Our heads stayed up and there was plenty of class play from the whole team; great keeping from Camilla, good defence from Kaz, Sian and Jess (if I do say so myself), nice movement and support in the mids from Ang, Bridget, Alex and Emma,  and forward thrusts up front with Lucy, Karen, Rose, Ali K and Rache!  Not to mention awesome supporting from Woolfy, Tiger, Sally, Freya and Jen on the sideline.
We were into the last ten minutes and things were not looking good.  We’d had quite a few short corners but had not converted any.  Then suddenly Kaz opened a can of whoopas and drilled it into the back board.  Two minutes later Ali K, with a hangy, scored.  And then about two minutes from time, as the crowd went wild, there was a goal mouth scramble that looked sooo like we might score... but it wasn’t to be.  3-2, not a bad score in the end! Well done everyone for holding our nerve and showing the character that has made us Champions!
Here’s to the Ladies 2s, the Dream Team of 2013/14.  Thank you for one of the best seasons ever!!
